Cannot Install Hardware, Access Is Denied

[2009-03-11]

I ran into a problem where in every WindowsXP boot-up and it complaints about "Cannot Install Hardware, access is denied". After did some Googling, I found this interesting article. I tried the technique described in this article and was able to identify which Registry entry is causing the problem.

Chuang Computer Tips: Cannot Install Hardware, Access Is Denied

This article offers a very nice trick when your Windows refuses to install any hardware. Be forwarned that this is for computer-literated people. There are also risk involves manipulating Windows registry content.

I ended up deleting the offending Registry entry and was hoping that would resolve the issue, but it DIDN'T.
After more Googling, I am trying another approach (the built-in system restore) and will see how it goes...

To run System Restore,

  1. Fint it.

  2. Run it.

  3. Choose the restore point.

Forgot to update this post. Actually, the built-in system restore works like a champ. Highly recommend using system restore to create "restore point" periodically or before installing any software.
