Nokia N810

After many days' thinking and research, yesterday, 6/20, I finally placed the order and purchased Nokia N810 from Buy.com.

Here are my reasons to purchase this gadget:
- replacing the aging Palm Zire31 (PIM replacement, GPE, windiz, available)
- needing a (limited function) GPS
- having the portable Skype & media player
- nice to having a portable Linux device

I shall report back after I receive and start using this device

Make sure to upgrade the firmware on the device, the firmware it comes with is beta-quality, the upgraded firmware is much better. Get Tear, a WebKit browser for the Nokia Internet Tablet, too. It's faster than MicroB. You probably will want Garnet VM from Access to run your PalmOS programs also.

The N810 package is received on 6/23.

The first thing is to insert the battery and fully charged the device.

The outlook is very stylish, but the whole thing is a little bulky (especially with battery).

Once charged, the device discovered and connected to home wi-fi network without any problem and I could surf Net. Very impressive.

Since the SDHC memory card I ordered has not yet arrived, I decided to put off the software upgrade.

Instead, I wanted to try the GPS. From within the house, the device just couldn't lock to GPS for many tries.

Once thing I have noticed is that the GPS function seems to be very CPU intensive. While GPS is searching, my browsing slowed down noticeably.

Well. That was enough for the first day.

On 6/24, my colleage who owns an N800 gave me a quick lesson on using Nokia Tablet. But he navigated so fast, most of the time, I couldn't keep up with.

One the way back home, I retried GPS again. I found surprisingly by the time I got home, the device has locked the GPS location.

The 8GB microSD arrived on 6/24.

Wow, it took me at least half-an-hour trying to properly insert the miniSD adapter into the slot. The design may be compact, but definitely not user-friendly.

Follow my colleage's advise, using "Application Manager" to update the software. Now that YouTube is playing normally.

My next step is to
0) order the MicroUSB host cable (so that the device can be used as an USB host)
1) install all needed/wanted software
-- GPSdrive
-- CJK IME
-- PIM, such as GPE or Wingiz
-- Linux/Unix tools, such as vim, vnc, ssh, etc.
2) map my GPS location to the provided map
3) research if there are Japanese-English and Chinese-English dictionaries available
